Where is SharePoint heading? 10 Predictions

Fierce Content Management guest author Christian Buckley offered his thoughts on the future direction of SharePoint. Below, I summarize his list of predictions, however, he goes into more detail in his article.

Ten predictions of where I see SharePoint heading in the next three to five years:
  1. Small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) will embrace SharePoint in the cloud, but enterprises will be laggards
  2. The hybrid model will become increasingly important
  3. Solutions will focus less on capturing the data, and more on what can be done with that data
  4. APIs for social will be created for the partner ecosystem
  5. Mobile will increasingly become the preferred method for data consumption
  6. Microsoft will target industry solutions
  7. Microsoft will continue to push SharePoint + Excel as a business intelligence (BI) platform and become *the* information worker BI tool of choice
  8. Microsoft will make stronger moves to become the dominant force within the crowded portfolio management space
  9. Microsoft will consolidate most of its business platform offerings behind the SharePoint brand
  10. Search will come to the forefront once again
Please have a look at the following article for more details around each of these predictions.

          “Hybrid” SharePoint Environment

With the release of SharePoint Server 2013 and the new Office 365, SharePoint is increasingly moving towards an “integrated services” architecture in which on-premises SharePoint Server features can be integrated with SharePoint Online to create what is commonly called a “hybrid” SharePoint environment.

New functionality in SharePoint Server 2013 and SharePoint Online enables you to integrate services like Search, Business Connectivity Services, and Duet Enterprise Online across the on-prem/cloud boundary.
